Optimal Service Function Chain Composition in Network Functions Virtualization

چکیده
Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is an emerging initiative where virtualization is used to consolidate Network Functions (NFs) onto high volume servers (HVS), switches, and storage. In addition, NFV provides flexibility as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) can be moved to different locations in the network. One of the major challenges of NFV is the allocation of demanded network services in the network infrastructures, commonly referred to as the Network Functions Virtualization Resource Allocation (NFV-RA) problem. NFV-RA is divided into three stages: (i) Service Function Chain (SFC) composition, (ii) SFC embedding and (iii) SFC scheduling. Up to now, existing NFVRA approaches have mostly tackled the SFC embedding stage taking the SFC composition as an assumption. Few approaches have faced the composition of the SFCs using heuristic approaches that do not guarantee optimal solutions. In this paper, we solve the first stage of the problem by characterizing the service requests in terms of NFs and optimally building the SFC using an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) approach.

متن کاملOn service-chaining strategies using Virtual Network Functions in operator networks
Network functions (e.g., firewalls, load balancers, etc.) have been traditionally provided through proprietary hardware appliances. Often, hardware appliances need to be hardwired back-to-back to form a service chain providing chained network functions. Hardware appliances cannot be provisioned on-demand since they are statically embedded in the network topology, making creation, insertion, mod...
متن کاملSNF: Synthesizing high performance NFV service chains
In this paperwe introduce SNF, a framework that synthesizes (S) network function (NF) service chains by eliminating redundant I/O and repeated elements, while consolidating stateful cross layer packet operations across the chain. SNF uses graph composition and set theory to determine traffic classes handled by a service chain composed of multiple elements. It then synthesizes each traffic class...
متن کاملOn the Energy Efficiency Prospects of Network Function Virtualization
Network Function Virtualization (NFV) has recently received significant attention as an innovative way of deploying network services. By decoupling network functions from the physical equipment on which they run, NFV has been proposed as passage towards service agility, better time-tomarket, and reduced Capital Expenses (CAPEX) and Operating Expenses (OPEX). One of the main selling points of NF...
